MILESTONE MARCH

March 2015 has been a very good month for FEDSMILL.com.  We posted our 500th article since beginning this venture in September 2011.  We also set a new personal record for the number of articles read in a single day with our posts being read over 1,800 times on March 12th.  Google Analytics also tells us that 9,000 articles are viewed each month on average.  Beyond those achievements, EEOC has agreed to send us e-copies of its newest federal employee decisions every week or so. LEXIS, WESTLAW and CYBERFEDS are the only other outfits that get the data currently.  While those three outfits will post every decision to their databases (and charge a fee for you to see them), we are going to comb through them to make union reps aware of select precedents, decisions, and other information that are particularly useful to representing employees.  Finally, we have started to pick out very popular FEDSMILL posts from the past and repost them for new subscribers who may have missed them.

We started this venture to help union leaders and activists overcome two obstacles.  First, we wanted them to have very cheap access to information that managers pay thousands for from companies like the three above.  So far, we are free.  Is that cheap enough?  Second, we noticed that a lot of unions only tell their locals about new case decisions and achievements involving their own union.  That is taking organizational pride too far. Information is power and just as a windmill draws power from the invisible wind blowing across a land, FEDSMILL aims to help you to draw power from spreading information and ideas widely.

Looking ahead, we are considering offering a 100 item competency test to help readers boost their expertise, lesson plans to use in local training sessions, quick guides for stewards, and even an on-line database subscribers can use to get not only some advice on over 250 topics, but also speedy access to the most helpful case law and other documents. Stay tuned and thanks to all of you who have signed up to get e-mail alerts about articles the day we post them.

Fedsmill is the best union website I have ever seen. Super-informative, innovative and free. You can’t beat that.

In my 6 years as a representative my research has shifted from CyberFEDS to FEDSMILL. This site is an invaluable resource. You should setup a link so locals can make a contribution to your efforts…my local would be happy to contribute!
